Given Donald Trump’s own, self-proclaimed record of sexual abuse it should come as no surprise that several male Trump staffers would be charged with sexual and physical abuse of women. They learned from their boss, the poster boy for the assaults that galvanized the #MeToo movement, that they, too, could engage in such behavior with impunity. At least for a while.

After Trump himself, the first one to get in trouble was campaign manager Corey Lewandowski, accused by Breitbart News reporter Michelle Fields of roughly grabbing her as she attempted to ask Trump a question in March 2016 at Trump International Golf Club in Jupiter, Florida.86

At first, Lewandowski denied touching Fields, but surveillance video showed that he clearly did grab her. Lewandowski then alleged he had grabbed her because she had reached out to touch Trump’s coat, which he considered a threat to the candidate.87

In the end, neither the Secret Service nor the Palm Beach County police decided to file charges. Lewandowski offered no apology. Fields resigned from Breitbart News because her editors sided with Lewandowski, not her. And Lewandowski was fired as campaign manager.88

Old habits apparently die hard, however. In November 2017, Republican activist Joy Villa accused Lewandowski of slapping her on the butt—“really hard, almost violent in nature”—at the Grammy Awards.89

She filed a sexual assault report against Lewandowski but ended up saying she’d settle for an apology—which, again, never came.
